Charcoal roller shutters fitted to the windows of a brick home in Adelaide

Roller Shutters Adelaide: What Really Sets the Price

The first thing most people ask us is how much roller shutters cost. It is a fair question, and it is the one we are least able to answer over the phone. Not because we are being cagey, but because two houses on the same street can need very different jobs.

What we can do is tell you exactly what moves the price up or down, so that when a quote arrives you know what you are looking at.

Why there is no single price

Every shutter is made to fit a specific opening. Before we quote, we visit, measure each window or door, talk through materials, colours and operation, and then send a detailed written quote. Any number given without a measure is a guess, and we would rather not guess with your money.

The size of the opening

This is the biggest factor. A small bedroom window needs far less material than a wide living-room opening or a sliding door. More slats, a bigger box and a stronger system all add up. If you are pricing a whole house, the count of openings matters as much as the size of each one.

Material and finish

Our roller shutters are made from aluminium or steel, with insulated foam inside the horizontal slats, and come in a range of colours. We source them from CW Products and Ozroll, two of the largest manufacturers in South Australia. The material you choose and the finish you want both feed into the quote.

What changes the price of roller shutters

Factor Tends to cost less Tends to cost more
Size of opening A small bedroom window A wide living-room opening or sliding door
Operation Manual winder Motorised or remote-controlled
Number of openings One or two windows A whole house
Job complexity Straightforward fit to an existing opening Power needed to be run for a motor

Manual, motorised or remote

A manual winder is the simplest and usually the cheapest to start with. Motorised and remote-controlled shutters cost more upfront, and they need an electrical installation. What you get in return is ease. For a large opening you will use daily, that is often worth it. Our post on automatic roller shutters in Adelaide explains the options.

Fitting the shutters

Roller shutters can be installed on most existing windows and doors without major renovation, which keeps the job simpler. Our own trained team does the installation. A straightforward fit to an existing opening is one thing. A job that needs power run to a motor is another, and that difference shows up in the price.

What you get for the money

To be straight about it, the upfront cost is one of the real drawbacks of roller shutters. Motorised versions cost more again, and some people find the look bulky. Against that, you get security, protection from storms and wind, cooler rooms in summer, a quieter house (they reduce noise but are not soundproof) and better privacy. Our post on how roller shutters can lower your energy bills throughout the year covers the savings side, and 10 benefits of installing roller shutters for Australian homes gives the wider picture.

What to check when you compare quotes

  • Was the opening measured on site, or was the price given over the phone?
  • Which material and which supplier are the shutters from?
  • Is the operation manual, motorised or remote, and is power included where needed?
  • Is installation included in the price?
  • What warranty applies, and who do you call for repairs?
  • Is the installer licensed? Ours is BLD 293749.

Ways to keep the cost sensible

You do not have to do every window at once. Start with the openings that matter most, usually the ones that take the afternoon sun or worry you for security. Choose manual for small windows and save motorised operation for the big, awkward ones. A good installer will happily talk you through that trade-off, and a plan you can stage is often easier on the budget than doing the whole house in one go.
